Dr. Ruth Westheimer was truly one of a kind. Please join us in remembering Dr. Ruth Westheimer, more commonly known as ‘Dr. Ruth.’ When it comes to sex education, few names resonate as profoundly as Dr. Ruth Westheimer. She was born Karola Ruth Siegel on June 4, 1928, in Frankfurt, Germany, Dr. Ruth’s journey to becoming a cultural icon and a beacon of sexual health and education is as inspiring as it is unique.

Dr. Ruth’s early life was marked by adversity. She was sent to Switzerland at the age of ten to escape the horrors of the Holocaust. She was separated from her family, who tragically perished in concentration camps. This early experience of loss and resilience no doubt shaped her indomitable spirit. After the war, she moved to Palestine, where she joined the Haganah, the Jewish paramilitary organization, and served as a sniper. On her 20th birthday, she was wounded in action by an exploding shell during the 1947-1949 Israeli War of Independence and almost lots both of her feet in the incident.

Later, her thirst for knowledge led her to France, where she studied psychology at the Sorbonne. Here, she immersed herself in the complexities of the human mind. Her passion for understanding human behavior and relationships grew, propelling her to continue her education in the United States. At the age of 42, she earned her Master’s degree in Sociology from The New School, and subsequently, her Doctorate in Education from Columbia University’s Teachers College.

Dr. Ruth’s entrance into the public consciousness began in the early 1980s with her revolutionary radio show, “Sexually Speaking.” Premiering in 1980 on New York’s WYNY-FM, the show quickly gained a devoted following thanks to Dr. Ruth’s unique blend of expertise, warmth, and unflinching honesty.  For an hour each week, listeners could call in and ask questions about sex, relationships, and intimacy, receiving answers that were both scientifically accurate and deeply empathetic.

“Sexually Speaking” wasn’t just a radio show; it was a lifeline for many who had nowhere else to turn for advice and reassurance. Dr. Ruth’s ability to demystify sex, coupled with her unwavering respect for every caller’s concerns, helped transform societal attitudes towards sexuality, making it a subject that could be discussed openly and honestly in homes across America.
